When to choose PNG, JPG or WebP
PNG — the transparent workhorse
PNG is lossless and supports full transparency. It's the right choice for logos, icons, screenshots, UI mockups and any image where sharp edges or an alpha channel matter. The trade-off is size: PNGs of photographs can be many times larger than the equivalent JPG or WebP.
JPG — the universal photo format
JPG (JPEG) uses lossy compression that's tuned for photographs. It has no transparency, so converting a transparent PNG to JPG will flatten the background — MagicBG fills it with white. For product photos, hero images and any picture without transparency, JPG at 80–90% quality is a solid default.
WebP — the modern all-rounder
WebP was designed by Google to replace both PNG and JPG. It's roughly 25–35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality, supports transparency like PNG, and is now supported by every mainstream browser. If you're publishing to the web in 2026, WebP is usually the best default.

Frequently asked questions
Is the image converter really free?+
Yes. MagicBG's PNG / JPG / WebP converter is free with no signup, no watermark and no daily limit. Everything runs on your device.
Are my images uploaded to a server?+
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your photos never leave your device.
PNG vs JPG vs WebP — which format should I choose?+
Use PNG for logos, icons and images with transparency. Use JPG for photos when file size matters. Use WebP when you want the smallest file with modern browser support — it's roughly 30% smaller than JPG at equal quality and also supports transparency.
Does WebP support transparency?+
Yes. WebP supports full alpha transparency, so it's a great replacement for PNG when you want smaller files.
Why does JPG turn my transparent background white?+
JPG does not support transparency. When you convert a transparent PNG or WebP to JPG, MagicBG fills the transparent area with white so the image still looks correct.
