Etsy Image Requirements: Complete Listing Photo Guide

Etsy gives sellers room to present products creatively, but its image guidance still includes important size, format and upload details. This guide separates Etsy's recommendations and features from points its own listing-image page does not specify.

The two distinctions many guides miss are straightforward: Etsy does not require a white background, and its listing-image Help Center page does not officially specify an aspect ratio.

Etsy first listing photo guidance

Etsy says the first listing photo shown on the storefront should be at least 635 x 635 px. If it is smaller, the listing may rank lower in search. This is a strong recommendation rather than a white- background rule.

A white background is not required. Etsy explicitly allows styled photography, props, color and lifestyle context, so choose a presentation that shows the item clearly without treating another marketplace's white-background policy as an Etsy requirement.

Etsy photo size, file size and formats

Etsy recommends listing photos with both width and height of at least 2000 px. Its Help Center also warns that images over about 1 MB may fail to upload, especially on slow connections.

Accepted formats are JPEG, PNG and GIF. A listing can contain up to 10 photos and one video.

Etsy's cited page does not specify an official aspect ratio. Many sellers use 4:3 or 1:1 as a common practice, but neither ratio should be presented as an Etsy rule. The same page does not explicitly address watermarks, so this guide does not label them allowed or prohibited.
